What is car detailing?

Auto detailing is a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning of both the exterior and the interior of a car using specialised tools, products, and professional skills. The aim of car detailing is to restore the car’s original aesthetic appeal, and to protect delicate components and features from aesthetic wear. So, what is car detailing all about, what happens to your car once you drive it to a detailing professional?

Car detailing is an important aspect of regular vehicle care

Professional car detailing is an important annual service which can help keep your vehicle in the best possible condition, to ensure it retains value. You can expect the interior and exterior of your car to look as good as new after car detailing, and some of the additional benefits include:

Why your car needs a professional auto detailing service

If you read a lot about cars, then you have probably heard the motorists’ phrase, “you are what you drive.” If your car is poorly maintained, this is reflected on you! In car detailing, this phrase relates to how clean and polished your vehicle is. This is why seeking a professional auto detailing service will be a win for you. The service refurbishes not only your car but also your image. Here’s why your car needs professional auto detailing.

1. It restores paintwork condition

There are a number of harmful elements in our environment that can affect the initial condition of the car. The surface wax and seal that initially came with the vehicle wear off with time, leaving the body susceptible to scratching and other forms of damage. Professional auto detailing will reinstate the original state of the car.

2. It raises the resale value of the car

No one wants to buy a rusted and scratched vehicle at a relatively high selling price. Even if the vehicle has an exceptional engine performance, a buyer will try negotiating way below your set price. Image is everything. Investing in a detailing service will incredibly boost the resale value of the car, which will make it worth the selling price you have set. Your buyer will purchase your car confidently.

3. Interior detailing restores comfort

Just like the exterior of the car, the interior of the car is prone to damage, wear, and tear. Dust and other elements get stuck in the interior, making them very hard to clean. These aspects reduce the general comfort of the car, which is instantly restored by taking the car for professional interior car detailing. The parts will be thoroughly vacuumed and washed and the worn parts like the seat foam and covers will be replaced with new ones. You’re not going to believe that you are driving the same car the next time you get behind the wheel.

Gives added protection

It helps maintain your car irrespective of weather conditions. This can be even more important if you keep your vehicle outside all the time. New cars have clear coatings applied to exterior paintwork and this will provide protection from the elements for a limited amount of time. Once your car has been exposed to sunlight and moisture, however, this protective coating breaks down.

Removes all traces of dust, debris and dirt

Professional car detailers have the ability to restore vehicle interiors to “as new” condition. DIY cleaning cannot be compared to the finishes that can be attained when a vehicle receives expert car detailing services. All leather, carpet and cloth fabrics inside your vehicle will be thoroughly and expertly cleaned and any stains or blemishes removed.

Get the best price for your car

Annual car detailing helps you maintain your vehicle in the best condition, so if you do need to put it on the market you can expect to achieve the best price. Selling your car or trading up to a higher spec vehicle is common for any driver, so it’s important to keep your vehicle spick and span in order to achieve offers at the highest values for the make and model.

Better than new

Cars that looking tatty and jaded achieve a new lease of life after car detailing. In many cases, paintwork can achieve a gleaming appearance that’s even more stunning than the vehicle possessed when new.

Exterior car detailing

Exterior detailing begins with an exhaustive wash of the car’s body, the wheels, mirrors, windows and external lamps. Automotive clay bar is then used to remove tightly bound dirt and residual that regular detergents cannot remove. The paint is polished to restore the colour to its original shine. Finally, the paint is waxed to give it a protective sealant and maintain the glossy look. The entire process removes small visible dents, stains and scratches on the bodywork and wheels. Although it is not a standard practice in regular detailing, engine bay cleaning is essential in extending the lifespan of plastic and rubber engine components by keeping a spotless engine bay. It is typically included in car valeting packages.

Interior car detailing

A dirty interior can develop bad odours and a stuffy atmosphere, which could compromise the control operations and overall driving experience. Therefore, a lot of work goes into interior car detailing. The first step includes a thorough vacuuming of the seats, carpets, trim, and the trunk area. Carpets can then be steam-cleaned and scrubbed to remove dried in stains and blemishes. The interior of the glass is cleaned to a sparkling, clear finish. Any leather trimming is wet-washed and conditioned to that soft leathery texture. Hard to reach areas like air vents and button rims are cleaned using specialised brushes and solvents. Finally, the entire cabin is re-vacuumed and wiped to remove any last traces of dirt and splashes. A perfume or deodorant may be spayed so give the interior a fresh scent.

Car Detailing – Frequently Asked Questions

I lease my car, why should I care about my car?

Chances are, you’ll care when the lease ends. If you check your contract, you’ll find that you’re probably responsible for the appearance of your vehicle when it is returned. If the paint is dull and lifeless (because it was never washed or polished) you could be hit with a reconditioning fee ranging from £500 to £5,000! Take care of your investment!

I’m collecting a new car. Why get it detailed before delivery?

Contrary to popular belief, new cars rarely look their best. Despite being treated to a quick wash and polish by the dealership (which may even result in swirl marks caused by over-eager attention and wrong techniques), residue from the protective film they wear during transportation may remain. Plus they may have been stored outside for a number of months, near docks, railways and other industrial areas, before being treated to a light dusting of contaminants when transported on the UK road system or by rail. FAW Customs will correct all these blemishes, leaving your new car looking out of this world and protected for years to come

I am being offered free washes, should I go for it?

It is safer to say ‘no’. As an improper wash can lead to damaging hours of polishing which made your paint look so amazing. Many of the detailing companies don’t actually meet the standards to make sure paintwork is maintained. Additionally, there is no guarantee that for washing, proper tools and methods are being used that will not effect your polishing

What is the difference between an Exterior Detail and a Paint Restoration?

As a general rule, our exterior detail is primarily completed to add protection to the outside of the vehicle, whereas the paint restoration helps bring life back into your vehicle’s exterior. The paint restoration might be a good fit for you if you are looking to remove or reduce swirl marks or light-medium scratches – proper paintwork correction will level the paint to a safe degree and leave a deep, shiny surface, which many times rivals the look of a brand new paint job.

What is the difference between swirl marks and scratches?

Swirl marks are usually introduced into the paint through improper maintenance techniques. Scratches are accidental defects, such as dragging a key across a surface, which happen during normal car operation. Swirl marks are fairly shallow scratches in the paint surface, so they are much easier to correct than deeper scratches.

What is the difference between detailing and washing?

Washing removes loose contaminants, dirt and grime. Detailing removes blemishes, oxidation and etching marks that are caused when contaminants penetrate the surface.

Automatic car wash seems better and faster. Why not I go for that?

Automatic car wash is quite rough on your paint. It will take away all the polish on your vehicle and your paint will start to appear dull soon enough. Furthermore, it is also less through method as compared to hand wash.

Why does the paint finish on my car look streaky and dull?

This lackluster appearance is often a sign of oxidation, which occurs as paint ages and decays from exposure to road oils and sunlight. You may also have surface scratches and swirls – which are caused by improper washing techniques and car neglect. This can be restored through machine polishing. You can decrease the process by washing your vehicle frequently, applying a sealant regularly and coating it with a hand wax at least annually.

What causes swirl marks?

Swirl marks are actually microscopic scratches in the finish. They are essentially scratches that have been put into the top layer of the paint. These scratches then act as tiny prisms, bending the light and creating a dull rainbow effect. These are often caused by the use of a buffer with the wrong type of polishing pad and/or wax/polish. Automatic car washes also can cause swirls, especially on clear coat paints. Another culprit is hand application or removal of product using a harsh material, or pads and cloths that have picked up micro abrasives from falling on the ground or improper storage. To avoid swirls, thoroughly wash all dirt particles from your finish before applying polish or wax. And always use a micro fiber towel, because its nap draws any contaminants on the surface up into the towel instead of letting them scratch the sensitive paint. At FAW Customs, we take extra precautions to ensure that we do the job right.

Why should I get my car detailed?

All vehicles need to be detailed regularly to maintain and preserve the paint condition. From simple washes every 1-2 weeks, to yearly polishing, a proper maintenance process keeps the paint clean, corrected and protected year round. Regular detailing and paint maintenance keeps defects like swirl marks from making the paint dull and contaminated. This contamination and neglect can often lead to premature clearcoat failure and necessitate a trip to a body shop, which greatly reduces a vehicle’s value. Our Portfolio shows how many of the vehicles were either neglected or poorly detailed before coming to FAW Customs for proper correction, so the difference shown in the photos is easily recognized. The difference after even the simplest quality detail is amazing, especially to someone doing it for the first time. A proper car detail can usually save the cost of an expensive re-painting, and almost always allow a higher selling value for a vehicle. Not to mention the pride of the owner after seeing their vehicle and thinking it looks better than ever!

How often should a vehicle be detailed?

At least once per year. Detailing has proven to be effective in getting you a better resale/trade-in price. So, if you are planning on selling/trading your car, make sure to have it detailed within a week of selling/trading it.

How long will it take to detail my car?

This all depends of which level of treatment you wish to achieve and the condition of your vehicle. The average time scale will usually range from 1 to 5 days. Once we have seen your vehicle we can tell you.
